ECS Summer School 2025: Highlights

Microelectronics is a wide technological sector for the development of Integrated Circuits (CHIPS!!). Chips need to be designed, fabricated, tested and assembled. They can be further combined in electronic systems, which shall be powered and animated with the soul of software. The ability of these systems to manage or exchange information with their environment sustains the interaction between the physical and digital worlds, bringing smartness all around.

In recent years this sector has experienced incredible progress. This is the result of improved microelectronics and integration technologies that open the possibility to increase present applications and to create new ones, as well. Microelectronics provides miniaturization and production in high numbers, so electronic systems can be deployed in multiple scenarios, from inside our bodies to outer space. Some cases are related to telecom (with better communication systems), to automotive (with electric cars and autonomous driving), or to biomedical devices (supporting human weaknesses, allowing minimally invasive surgery, and more generally improving prevention and diagnosis).

Via lectures, demonstrations and interactive activities, the program will introduce some of the possibilities offered by present microelectronics devices and foreseen future applications, showing the many facets of the fascinating world of microelectronics.

The program will cover four main topics:

  • Semiconductor technology
  • Integrated Circuits design
  • Digital systems and Embedded Intelligence
  • Integration

Talks will be delivered by representatives from leading universities, research institutes and companies. Career testimonies by young engineers will complete the week.

Suggested preliminary readings

To attend the ECS summer school and benefit from it, there is no specific prerequisite, apart from being a student in STEM (Sciences, Technology, Engineering and Math). Nevertheless, some of the students from the previous editions have suggested that, for attendees who are not at all familiar with microelectronics (e.g., what is a transistor, what is it used for and how is it fabricated), some prior readings might help.

Therefore, here are a few documents and videos you might want to have a look at:

Practical Details

How to reach the BME campus

The BME campus can be reached easily with public transports from the international bus stations and railway stations of the city. A public bus service (line 200E) runs from the airport to “Kőbánya Kispest” metro station (end stop) approximately every 10 minutes (it takes 11 stops ~ 21 minutes). From “Kőbánya Kispest”, one can take the M3 metro to “Corvin-negyed” metro station (7 stops ~12 minutes) and then reach the campus with Tram 4 or 6 (they run on the same line, 3 stops ~4 minutes). It takes approximately 1 hour to reach the campus from the airport.

Travel costs

Travel costs to/from Budapest will be reimbursed based on receipts up to a total amount of 600 Euros for students.

Lodging and food

Lodging and food will be provided to the selected students free of charge.

Important!

Bring sportswear and sport shoes for our Tuesday evening activities!

Reimbursement procedure

Your travel costs will be reimbursed by an organism named Fondazione CeUB for a max of euro 600,00 after receiving the attached forms duly filled in together with the proofs of payment.

Please send reimbursement forms and proofs of payment only after the Summer School. This way, you will be able to include all eligible costs, e.g. the “Budapest-pass” to use the city public transports.

  • Personal data
  • Declaration of administrative and top management positions
  • Expense reimbursement form
  • Kilometer reimbursement form

If the proofs of payment are e-ticket you can send them by mail to Roberta Partisani, rpartisani@ceub.it

Otherwise you should send the original proofs of payment by ordinary post to:

ROBERTA PARTISANI

FONDAZIONE CEUB

VIA FRANGIPANE 6

47032 BERTINORO FC

ITALY

Photocopies are not eligible for reimbursement.

Please note that car rental and associated fuel expenses are not eligible. However, using your own car is OK. In that case, you will be reimbursed on the basis of 0.30 € per km.

You are kindly requested to send the filled forms within 30 days from the end of the Summer School with a copy of passport or I.D. card. Expect the reimbursement process to take up to six weeks, once all forms and proofs of payment have been collected. Be patient but do not worry, it will be done!
